Director
The director of the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) is responsible for all aspects of the CIP program and reports jointly to the Associate Deans for Post Graduate Education and Research and to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPS). (see organizational diagram) .
The director should have, or have had, an active medical research program and be familiar with the requirements of the RCPS for specialty training and with the various post graduate degree programs at UBC. He/she should have had experience in training graduate students and post doctoral fellows and should have had experience in mentoring young and emerging clinical scientists.
UBC Faculty of Medicine CIP Committee
Membership:
The Clinician investigator program is comprised of clinician scientists from all major departments in the faculty of medicine which is a reflection of the content of residents in the CIP. The committee also includes representation from a resident in the CIP who is elected by his or her peers. The CIP committee meets 2-3 times per year and regular meeting minutes are kept.
The CIP committee is responsible for:
- The selection of residents into the CIP and the approval of their supervisors and training environment.
- Overview and maintenance of standards in the operation of the research component of the program
- Coordination of departmental/divisional components of the CIP, including interdisciplinary linkages
- Assessment of progress of CIP residents is based upon a report filed by the supervisor and a progress report concerning presentations, publications and status of ongoing research progress provided by individual residents.
- Verification of satisfactory completion by the residents of research component of the program based upon the educational objectives of the CIP.

The program coordinator assists the CIP director in day-to-day details of the training program, including the coordination of committee meetings, processing applications, scheduling of seminars and workshops, distribution of curricula materials, developing and updating of the Program website, tracking the career development of current and past trainees, publishing newsletters and annual reports, and managing the Program budget.

CIP residents can be in any Royal College accredited Department within the Faculty of Medicine. They are registered in their disciplinary program as well as the CIP program and the RCPS specialty program director and the CIP program director jointly report to the RCPS with respect to the content, duration of training and evaluation of individual CIP residents.
Each resident must have a designated research supervisor who is an independent investigator and fulfills the requirements of the faculty CIP Committee and, where appropriate, the graduate school of the university. The research supervisors for residents enrolled in graduate programs must be approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. CIP research supervisors must have established research funding, with sufficient funds to allow successful completion of the degree by the resident. They must have established research productivity (manuscripts, abstracts, presentations), an international/national reputation in the field, and experience in supervising graduate students. The supervisor must be working in an established research environment, supportive to clinician investigator training, with a critical mass of associated students, research and technical personnel. The supervisor must agree to adhere to the terms and conditions required by the CIP for resident research training.
In addition, each resident in the CIP must have a research advisory committee that consists of at least three individuals who have expertise in the research area, including one individual who represents the specialty/subspecialty in which the resident is registered that can facilitate clinical/research integration.
